Northern farmers count losses as association refuses to supply onions to South
Onion farmers in the North have lamented the gradual decay of large stock of onions after suppliers continue to boycott supply to the southern part of Nigeria.
Daily Trust reported that over 50 trucks of onions are rotting away at their farms and markets following the suspension.
Recall that the Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (OPMAN) had announced a boycott of onions supply to the South-East over the security challenges currently facing the region.
OPMAN national president, Aliyu Isa, who made this announcement at a press briefing on May 2nd, hinged that the association’s decision on the recent hijack of their two trucks by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Aliyu was quoted by Daily Trust saying, “If the government fails to adhere to the demands of the association, we are shutting down the supply of onions to the entire South by Monday, June 7, 2021.”
