NNPC director celebrates Taliban victory

Chairman of the Kano State Gas Pipeline Project Delivery and Gas Industrialisation Committee, Muaz Magaji, has been embroiled in a fresh controversy.

In what many described as weird and unbecoming of a public servant, Magaji was caught celebrating the take over of Afghanistan by the Taliban on Facebook.

In the Facebook post that has since been deleted, Mogaji described the overthrow of the Ashraf Ghani-led Afghan government as a victory for the Deobandi Islamist movement and military organisation.

Ghani has since fled the country to an undisclosed location.

Magaji oversees the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano Natural Gas Pipeline (AKKP), a project coordinated by Nigerian Gas Company, a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation subsidiary, to transport natural gas from Ajaokuta in Kogi to Kaduna and Kano.

“It’s a WIN-WIN in Afghanistan today,” said Mr Magaji in the since-deleted post on his verified Facebook account with over 47,000 followers on Tuesday.

PeoplesGazzete reports that the post which was in response to a story by the Daily New Hausa has been shared by over 20 persons garnered over 140 comments and 500 likes.

Although it is not clear if he would be sanctioned for the post, recall that Magaji had similarly Facebooked himself into trouble last year, leading to his sack as the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in the cabinet of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

WuzupNigeria reported that Magaji was sacked by Ganduje in April 2020 for celebrating the death of the late Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, who died of COVID-19 complications.

“Win-win … Nigeria is free and Abba Kyari dies in epidemic… The martyrdom of man is perfect!” one of Magaji’s posts read.

He was later reappointed to his current position.

Recall that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, was under fire some months ago for his past controversial comments on terrorist groups including the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

“This jihad is an obligation for every single believer, especially in Nigeria… Oh God, give victory to the Taliban and to al-Qaeda (Allahumma’ nṣur Ṭālibān wa-tanẓīm al Qā‘ida),” Pantami said in one of his vicious sermons in the 2000s.
