The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have given a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government, expressing dissatisfaction with the non-implementation of the 16-point agreement reached on October 2, 2023.
The leaders of NLC and TUC are dismayed by the government’s lack of action despite their efforts to maintain industrial peace, as citizens continue to endure widespread suffering and hardship.
The October 2 agreement aimed to address the adverse socio-economic consequences of the price hike in Premium Motor Spirit and the devaluation of the naira induced by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.
According to the labor unions, these policies have resulted in severe economic consequences for the Nigerian masses and workers.
In a joint statement, NLC and TUC expressed regret over the necessity of resorting to such measures.
They stated, “It is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.”
Effective February 9, the unions have issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the fulfillment of their part of the understanding within 14 days.
