South African police have discovered the body of a ninth woman near Johannesburg. The news that a ninth woman found dead has deeply unsettled the community. Investigations continue into a series of deaths that have sparked fear and anger over violence against women.
According to Reuters, the latest body was discovered on Thursday in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg. Several other women have been found dead there over the past two months, with the ninth woman found dead adding to the community’s distress.
Police said the woman appeared to be in the same age range as the previous victims. However, they stressed that investigators had not established whether the cases were connected.
“We were called here this morning after the discovery of yet another body of a young woman,” Deputy National Commissioner for Policing Tebello Mosikili said. The fact that a ninth woman found dead has now been reported has heightened public concerns even further.
“It’s still very early to make any conclusions about this body.”
Police investigate possible links
Most of the previous victims were women in their 20s and 30s. The ninth woman found dead was believed to be in a similar age group.
Some were found without clothing and showed signs of sexual violence. This intensified public concern over whether the deaths could be connected.
Police said preliminary observations suggested the latest victim may have been killed elsewhere before her body was dumped at the location.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged that “no stone will be left unturned” as authorities investigate the killings.
Residents fear for daughters
The discoveries have heightened anxiety among residents of Ekurhuleni, particularly women and parents.
“I am feeling a lot of fear and paranoia, especially for us with daughters,” resident Nomgqibelo Tshabalala said.
She added that concern for her daughter’s safety had affected her daily life.
“My daughter caught an Uber yesterday and I did not sleep worried and when I heard about this incident on the radio this morning I got even more scared,” she said.
South Africa has struggled with high levels of gender-based violence for years despite repeated government pledges to tackle the problem.
The latest discovery has renewed demands for stronger measures to protect women. Meanwhile, investigators work to determine whether the deaths form part of a wider pattern.
