The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control disclosed on Thursday that the COVID-19 death toll has hit 2,000 after eight more patients died from the complication of the virus.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control made the disclosure via a statement on its official Twitter handle.

The agency said that 287 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 159,933.

The NCDC also added that there are currently 15,528 active cases.

“On the 11th of March 2021, 287 new confirmed cases and 8 deaths were recorded in Nigeria across 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the last 24 hours.

“To date, 159,933 cases have been confirmed, 142,404 cases have been discharged and 2,001 deaths have been recorded nationwide.

“The 287 new cases are reported from 18 states- Lagos (107), Kwara (26), Akwa Ibom (23), Bauchi (22), Ogun (21), Rivers (19), Kaduna (14), FCT (11), Abia (8), Edo (8), Ekiti (6), Kano (5), Gombe (4), Osun (4), Oyo (3), Plateau (3), Nasarawa (2), and Delta (1),” the statement read in part.

Since it recorded its COVID-19 index case on February 27, 2020, Nigeria has so far tested 1,601,396 people.

Meanwhile, the agency revealed that following the successful treatment of 2,421 people in the last 24 hours, it has discharged 142,404 people were discharged, after testing negative for the virus.

The statement added that “Our discharges today include 1,858 community recoveries in FCT and 259 community recoveries in Lagos State managed in line with guidelines.”

“A multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, continues to coordinate the national response activities.”
