Nigerians react as election postponement disrupts wedding, burial plans
As news that the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] has postponed the 2019 elections, Nigerians across the world have reacted angrily, saying the postponement will affect planned weddings and burials.
WuzupNaija had earlier reported that INEC in the earlier hours of Saturday postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled for today (Saturday) to Saturday, 23 February 2019. The commission also rescheduled the governorship, State Houses of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory Area Council polls earlier fixed for March 2 to Saturday, March 9 2019.
Nigerians, however, have wondered on social media why the country does not seem to get anything right.
Some recalled that in 2011, former INEC chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, also shifted the National Assembly elections on the day of the elections when voting had already started.
Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington, whose husband, Olubankole, better known as Banky W, is contesting in the national assembly election hoped the postponement will spur Nigerians to vote massively against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
She wrote:
“Hope this annoys people enough to come out to vote on the 23rd of February and 9th of March. I hope this postponement lights a fire in their souls and makes them see…more than ever…that we must take our nation back.”
On her part, Nigerian radio personality and author, Toke Makinwa, described the postponement as an embarrassment.
Writing on her Instagram wall, the vlogger wondered why INEC waited till the middle of the night to announce the postponement.
She wrote
If this picture of youth corpers sleeping outside is real then it’s a big shame. I am disgusted at the blatant disregard, you wait till 2am to announce the postponement of the elections????Why??? People have travelled far and wide to their various polling units and you do this???? Which way Nigeria???? Why do we love to embarrass ourselves so much? The whole world is watching and we do this???? I am so confused.
Just when you think it can’t get any worse, you think they can’t shock you anymore. Just when you are so sure, they outdo themselves. We must not give up, we must stay prayed up and vigilant this week. Come 23rd we decide, #nigeriadecides2019 #NigeriaisyouandI

This prof is a failure for postponing this election. What opportunity do dey need to identify difficulties which dey couldn’t do weeks/months before now?
Jega postponed elections in 2015 as a result of grave security challenges.

Guess you forgot that Jega INEC postponed election while we are already voting in 2011. Then 2015, where many didn’t get their PVC and another postponement but fact is, something is massively wrong with this country.

Yes INEC postpones election by a week. We forget things in this country. Remember it took the Reps many weeks to assent request on INEC budget. We told them. #corper #jega #Inec #NigeriaDecides2019 #Nigeria #elections2019
