Nigerians can still bring dependents to UK, says British High Commissioner

Published

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery has revealed that although some international students are barred from bringing dependents, those enrolled in PhD programs are permitted to bring their dependents into the country.

During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday, Montgomery disclosed the recent policy change, which prohibits international students in higher education from bringing dependents to the UK.

This measure aims to address the increasing challenge of foreign students bringing dependents.

The policy change came about due to concerns raised by university Chancellors regarding the strain caused by a large influx of dependents on numerous universities.

Challenges such as limited accommodation, access to medical services through the National Health Service, and schooling for dependents were cited as reasons behind the introduction of these policy adjustments.

However, Montgomery clarified that the restrictions are not universal. He highlighted that those pursuing long-term research degrees, such as PhDs or doctorates, are exempt from these limitations.

He emphasized, “Those coming to the UK for a doctorate can still bring their dependents, but if you are coming to the UK with a study visa for an undergraduate degree or short-term master’s degree, I’m afraid the rules have been changed.”

Montgomery expressed hope that despite the changes, demand for studying in the UK would remain sustained. He also noted that factors such as the value of the Naira would influence the affordability of education for prospective students.

Earlier in January, the UK government introduced measures to restrict Nigerian and other international students from bringing their families as dependents while studying in the country, except in specific circumstances.

The changes were aimed at reducing net migration and preventing misuse of the visa system, as stated by UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman.
