Published

The teenage girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution are safe and will return to Nigeria next week, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.

In an interview with TVC on Saturday, Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that the girls are currently in safe custody.

Over 10 Nigerian teenage girls, all under the age of 18, were reportedly lured to Ghana by a man who has now been arrested by the Ghanaian police. The girls were rescued by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation, a group representing Nigerians living in Ghana.

In a viral video showing the rescue, a NIDO official said, “We just rescued all these ones from one single person, innocent Nigerian children that were brought here to do what they wouldn’t have wished to do. They are helpless. They picked them and send them to do prostitution and they would be collecting money from these innocent children.”

Dabiri-Erewa posted on X about the heartbreaking situation, thanking Chief Callistus, Chairman of NIDO Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the perpetrator. “These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution,” she wrote. “We thank Chief Callistus, Chairman, NIDO Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the evil perpetrator. I am sure NAPTIP will follow up, very heartbreaking.”

In a follow-up post, she announced that another set of girls had been rescued and that the culprit would be charged in court in Ghana next week. “The culprit will be charged to court in Ghana next week and arrangements are being made to bring the rescued girls back to Nigeria,” she stated, emphasizing that traffickers must be named and shamed. “They are worse than drug barons! And as long as they are walking about freely, innocent young children will continue to be trafficked!”
