Benin Republic to release Sunday Igboho soon – Lawyer

Published

An Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has said that embattled Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, will soon be released from detention in the Benin Republic.

Recall that Igboho has been held in the Beninoise detention since his arrest in July 2020 at Cotonou airport en route to Germany alongside his wife.

After spending over 200 days in detention, members of Agbekoya Worldwide, some days ago, demanded his release and threatened to break him out of prison using traditional means.

“They should release him legally and quickly or we will use our traditional means and powers to take Igboho out of the court,” Agbekoya’s president, Kamorudeen Okiki said.

However, in a statement coming less than 48 hours after Agbekoya’s statement, Olajengbesi, n a Facebook post on Sunday, claimed that the activist would be freed soon.

“Chief Sunday Igboho will be out very soon and there will be massive jubilation across the entire Yorubaland.

“He is no doubt a courageous man. This is very authoritative just that our Yoruba leaders should stop being selfish and allow good to prevail,” the lawyer said.
