A 20-year-old wife, Amina Hassan, allegedly set her husband’s house on fire after he refused to divorce her in Shuware community, Mubi North LGA, Adamawa State.
The incident occurred just five weeks after their marriage.
Amina Hassan, speaking to the police on Tuesday, revealed the existence of a pre-wedding arrangement where her husband, Muhammed Auwal, was supposed to divorce her shortly after their marriage ceremony.
She explained, “We made an arrangement that he would divorce me after the marriage. I met him and pleaded with him to divorce me, but he remained adamant. He descended on me and started beating me instead of divorcing me, as a result of which I lost my temper and set the house ablaze.”
The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed that Amina had informed the police about her actions. An investigation is currently underway.
A few days before the wedding, Amina had reportedly informed her parents that she was no longer interested in the marriage.
Despite her objections, her parents insisted that there was no turning back, as invitation cards had already been distributed.
Sources close to Amina shared that, in desperation, she sought help from a native doctor to turn her husband’s heart away from her.
However, this attempt seemingly backfired, as her husband appeared more interested. Frustrated and angry, Amina took drastic measures, setting their house on fire.
In an attempt to escape the repercussions, the native doctor allegedly fled Mubi, making his phone number inaccessible.
The police are now investigating the circumstances leading to the arson and the pre-wedding agreement between Amina and her husband.
