Netflix sacks employee for allegedly leaking internal data about Dave Chappelle’s ‘The Closer’
Popular streaming giant, Netflix, has annouced the sack of an employee for allegedly leaking internal data about Dave Chappelle’s standup special ‘The Closer’.
The unnamed employee was said to have leaked the confidential viewership data for “Closer” to Bloomberg, along with Chappelle’s compensation details.
UK Metro reports that the controversy that ensued due to the leak led to LGBT advocacy groups criticisiing Chappelle for jokes perceived to be transphobic in ‘The Closer’, which was released earlier this month.
According to the publication, Chappelle had supported “Harry Potter” author- JK Rowling – another high-profile figure accused of making alleged anti-trans comments – and said ‘gender is a fact’.
Rowling, accoridng to USA Today, drew backlash after conflating sex with gender and defending ideas suggesting that changing one’s biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.
“I agree, man,” Chappelle says in his special, amid base jokes about trans bodies. “Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. That is a fact.”
It said in a statement: “We have let go of an employee for sharing confidential, commercially sensitive information outside the company.
“We understand this employee may have been motivated by disappointment and hurt with Netflix, but maintaining a culture of trust and transparency is core to our company.”
The confidential data is said to have appeared in a Bloomberg News article that reported Netflix spent $24.1million (£17.5million) on The Closer and $23.6million (£17.1million) on Chappelle’s 2019 special, Sticks & Stones.
Netflix reportedly allows staff to view data on the condition they do not share it publicly.
The controversy that ensued on social media in the wake of “Closer’s” release has now extended beyond the internet as trans Netflix employees and allies announcing a walkout planned for Oct. 20.
According to The Verge, the employee is who was fired is trans and was organizing the protest.
