Operatives from the Forward Operations Base in Bonny, Rivers State, have successfully rescued 59 people from a stranded dredging vessel at the mouth of the Opobo River.
Sadly, the rescue mission resulted in the loss of one Navy officer.
The vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, was under contract with Sterling Global Oil Limited and was working at the Opobo field when it encountered trouble. The river is known for being especially turbulent at this time of year.
The Nigerian Navy’s spokesman, Aiwuyor Aliu-Adams, said the FOB Bonny received a distress call about the vessel’s situation. “The distress call was urgent, and we had to act quickly due to the dangerous conditions at the mouth of the river,” he explained.
In response, the FOB Bonny deployed a 10-man team in two interceptor boats, led by Base Operations Officer Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza. “Attempts to approach the distressed vessel were difficult because of the strong waves,” the statement added. “We had to send in a second squadron of three boats to assist with the rescue.”
The Navy also sent additional support, including Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, and helicopters from both the Navy and the Air Force. Despite the challenges, all 59 crew members were safely rescued. However, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza tragically lost his life during the operation.
“The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of Lieutenant Commander Gwaza,” said the spokesman. “He was a skilled combat diver who risked his life to save others. His bravery and sacrifice reflect the dedication and risks faced by our personnel in ensuring maritime safety. His memory will always be honored.”
