The Nigerian Air Force has deployed multiple pumping machines to help recover aircraft wreckage submerged in a river at Igbokoda, Ondo State. Meanwhile, NAF Ondo crash recovery operations continue.

According to Vanguard, the Air Force is also engaging community leaders and residents over concerns. In fact, the NAF Ondo crash recovery operation could affect local water sources.

The engagement was led by the Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme. He acknowledged residents’ concerns and assured them that the service would address the issues raised during the NAF Ondo crash recovery process.

Pumping equipment deployed at crash site

The Air Force said recovery personnel had made progress despite difficult terrain and challenging underwater conditions. Importantly, the NAF Ondo crash recovery team is working under exceptionally complex circumstances.

In a statement issued by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the service explained the main wreckage remained submerged. It is also deeply embedded in the riverbed.

The pumping machines are being used to remove water from the area surrounding the crash site. This allows personnel to work towards accessing the wreckage.

“This painstaking process requires sustained effort, specialised technical support and careful coordination to advance the recovery operations safely and effectively,” the statement said.

Air Force addresses community concerns

The service acknowledged the concerns of residents who rely on local water sources. It also said it remained committed to engaging with the community.

It also thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while the recovery operation continued.

The Air Force said the difficult conditions at the site had made the process complex. However, personnel were continuing their work while prioritising safety and the dignity of the victims.

Support promised for bereaved families

The Nigerian Air Force also said the Chief of the Air Staff had reaffirmed the service’s commitment. This is to support families affected by the NAF Ondo crash recovery incident.

According to the statement, applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits, would be processed.

The service said it had established a dedicated helpline at its headquarters to help affected families obtain timely information.

Recovery efforts are expected to continue as personnel work to access the submerged wreckage and provide further verified updates.
