2019 Elections
Mixed reactions as New York Times describes Atiku as a ‘corrupt-stained candidate’
Nigerians on Twitter have criticised the New York Times over its report on the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, where it described the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar as ‘a corruption-stained candidate’.
In the opening paragraph of the article written by one Dionne Searcey and titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari wins Second term as Nigeria’s President,’ the NYT wrote:
“Officials declared early Wednesday that Muhammadu Buhari had won a second term as president of Africa’s most populous country, where voters rejected a corruption-stained candidate in favor of a leader who promised to continue a campaign to eliminate graft.”
The report angered some Nigerians who believed the American-based media was biased in its description of Atiku as “a corruption-stained candidate”, while others felt it was an apt description of the PDP’s candidate.
The article which was shared on the New York Times’ Twitter page has so far garnered over 3000 retweets and 3359 likes.

Muhammadu Buhari has won a second term as Nigeria’s president, in an election that was in many ways a referendum on honesty https://t.co/Qp3O0ccTOk

Sponsored headline. But not to worry. Very soon ‘honesty’ will employ the millions of jobless people that collected peanuts to vote him.
Truth is the most dishonest Nigerian in all of our history has just rigged himself into a second term

Muhammadu Buhari is not honest at all. The elections were marred by violence, killings and irregularities. Buhari government colluded with the electoral commission to change the people’s mandate given to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. It is a shame.

The recently released results by The INEC Nigeria is a total charade orchestrated by PMB demystifying himself like a prostitute who claimed to be vagin: the entire electioneering results were deeply doctored to favour APC before presentations for the whole wide world to witness.

@nytimesworld this is the worst election in the history of Nigeria.
Bloated with violence, voters disenfranchisement, use of military as a tool to rig the election.
What level of lazy journalism is this ???— Dickson Grey (@grey_dickson) February 27, 2019
You cannot speak on behalf of a nation when you have no mandate to do so Buhari rigged election….. robbed Atiku Abubakar of his mandate and tomorrow he will claim to be a Muslim with integrity…. fraud…. shameless man

Honesty pays. Great lesson to our present and incoming leaders.

Very apt one @nytimes…
When Buhari was building name, the other was busy stealing to build mansions/schools home and abroad.
Now that he needs name, his wealth becomes useless and irrelevant before Nigerians.
Congratulations once again Mr President @MBuhari and Prof Osinbajo

Thank you @nytimes for the understanding you have about our dear President @MBuhari.
The election was a serious battle between Money and Integrity, and we are happy celebrating after the declaration of Buhari as the winner.#Hope #NextLevel— Adeiza Salihu. ?? (@abdulganiyus1) February 27, 2019
Who writes these kind of articles? Have you asked us here in Nigeria if we gave any referendum at all. Well to hear better ask US investors here in Nigeria how their investments are suffering.. Rubbish news. If an election can’t be free nor fair there’s no Honesty
— Praise (@supapraise) February 27, 2019
U.S that is calling someone corruption stained cannot openly tell us the issue with the candidate. Years are going by and we hear they arranged ‘waiver’ for him to visit U.S. They themselves are corruption shrouded in mystery. Nonsense people! https://t.co/8hNJrBOFaj
