The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an urgent investigation into a case involving some officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who were accused of extorting ₦5.2 million from a group of young men.

The incident reportedly happened while the young men were travelling from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to Akure in Ondo State.

The minister’s spokesman, Babatunde Alao, made this known in a statement released on Tuesday. He said the report, which has gone viral, has drawn serious attention, and the minister has vowed that anyone found guilty will be punished.

“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct from our security agencies,” the statement said. “We are building a paramilitary system that is disciplined, professional and serves Nigeria with dignity and patriotism.”

Tunji-Ojo also said justice must be served in the case and that security officers must carry out their duties with honesty and fairness.

The NSCDC, which works under the Ministry of Interior, is expected to assist in protecting lives and property. However, this incident has raised concerns over the behaviour of some of its officers.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry of Interior has promised to share updates with the public as new findings emerge.
