Pandemonium erupted in Ibadan after a brawl between officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service and officials of Ibadan North Local Government left several people including the chairman, Shuaib Oladayo aka Agbaegbe, injured.
PUNCH reported that Agbaegbe was involved in a heated debate with the immigration officers over an earlier altercation that happened between them and his aides on Wednesday.
The tension subsequently degenerated into a scuffle among the bickering parties.
Eyewitnesses claimed on Wednesday that the council boss and some of his aides were thoroughly assaulted by the Immigration officers at the headquarters of the command in Oyo State.
They averred that Agbaegbe had gone to the office in the company of his aides after he was told that some persons were using forged letterhead of the council to perpetrate fraudulent activities there.
One of the sources said the chairman, two councillors and his media aide and photographer who went there were challenged and harassed immediately they stepped on the premises.
One of the sources said, ” The chairman, two councillors, media aide to the chairman and his photographer had gone to verify what they were told.
“But some of the officers challenged him at the entrance and that led to an altercation. Immediately the chairman entered with his people they were assaulted. He was even slapped and the place became rowdy.
“They even locked them inside and didn't allow them to leave the Immigration office but the news of what happened there got to the council and some staff and others stormed there to ensure the release of the chairman.”
Debunking the claim, some of the indicted officers who craved anonymity claimed that the politicians stormed the office with hoodlums and attacked their officers.
They said the chairman went to the Immigration office to collect a Nigerian passport for his friend and was told to move away from where he was.
According to the officers, the aggrieved chairman felt slighted and the situation degenerated into a free for all.
They further countered earlier claim, insisting that it was the council boss that brought hoodlums to attack the place.
When contacted via WhatsApp, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, Olufemi Adetunji, told our correspondent that he could not comment on the incident because he was still receiving treatment due to the injuries he sustained from the alleged attack on the office by the chairman’s loyalists.
The immigration spokesman said,” I can’t talk on this tonight as I’m treating myself from injuries I sustained from their attack. There may be press release tomorrow.”
