Police arrest trigger-happy DSP over indiscriminate shooting in Abia
The Abia State Police Command on Sunday says it has arrested an assistant superintendent of police, Ifeanyi Henry, for reportedly shooting indiscriminately without cause at Aba Central Police station
The suspect caused major panic at Okwu na Uka Street and St Michael’s Road, linking the main gate of the station on Saturday around 7pm.
Eyewitnesses said an unprovoked Henry pulled out a gun and began shooting.
DailyTrust also reports that the suspect allegedly assaulted women, including his colleague’s wives, children and traders.
Henry who was believed to be under the influence of drugs shot directly at people afterwards but he was overpowered and disarmed by some mobile police officers after his pistol malfunctioned.
Confirming the arrest, Abia police spokesman, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said:
“The Nigerian police is a very disciplined organisation. And there are laid down procedures in handling the issue of any erring officer irrespective of his rank and cadre.
“I condemn the actions of the police officer and I have to tell you that he is in custody right now and he will be treated departmentally,” Ogbonna said.
According to reports, some persons sustained injuries and were rushed to Aba General Hospital, which is adjacent to the station.
