Manchester United stall City’s trophy win with Villa defeat

Published

Manchester United have denied noisy neighbours, Manchester City, a chance to lift the Premier League trophy this weekend with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.

After slipping to a 2-1 defeat at home to Chelsea yesterday, City needed Villa to beat United to become the official champions and were halfway to safety as the Villans took the lead in the first half.

A clumsy play from the United players opened them up as Bertrand Traore scored a smashing goal to give Villa the lead into the break.

With City 45 minutes away from lifting the trophy, United had a record to match and that was what they pushed for.

Douglas Costa fouled Paul Pogba to give away a penalty which was scored by the penalty specialist, Bruno Fernades.

Costa’s penalty giveaway was his second against Pogba after a similar error in the first leg gave United a 2-1 win.

The comeback continued moments later as Mason Greenwood nicked the second to give United a 2-1 lead in the game after a pass from Aaron Wan-bissaka.

Edinson Cavani sealed the win with a trademark header to give the visitors a 3-1 win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have now amassed 31 points from losing position after 10 games, equalling a PL record of wins from behind.

The Red Devils faced Leicester on Tuesday as they hope to secure their Champions League qualification for next season.
