A 24-year-old man, Muanaenye Chekwube Victor, has been arrested by police in Anambra State for allegedly kidnapping his own friend and collecting a ransom of ₦5.3 million in dollars.
According to the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrest was made on June 26 by officers from the Uli Divisional Headquarters. The suspect was said to have tricked his friend into following him under the pretense of visiting another friend before handing him over to a kidnapping gang.
“Victor and his criminal gang allegedly abducted their friend and, to avoid suspicion, pretended to have been kidnapped by their criminal gang,” Ikenga said in a statement.
The victim was later released after the ransom was paid.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to planning the kidnap and collecting the ransom with his gang members. He is now cooperating with police and helping them track down others involved.
