Man City beat Chelsea 1-0 to extend gap atop Premier League
Manchester City have defeated Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to extend their lead atop the Premier League table.
Kevin De Bruyne’s sensational finish (70′) ensured that the defending Champions complete a double over The Blues after Gabriel Jesus scored the winner in a similar scoreline at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.
Man City are now 13 points clear of Thomas Tuchel’s men after the dominating victory, albeit with few chances as Chelsea failed to register a single shot in the first half, the first time they’d failed to record one in a single half of Premier League football since May 2018 (first half vs Newcastle).
Pep Guardiola’s men have now completed 12 wins in a row as they continue their bid for a back-to-back Premier League title.
It’s the ninth run of 12+ successive victories in the competition’s history, with the Citizens now responsible for four of those (and all under Pep Guardiola).
The defeat leaves second-placed Chelsea’s title hopes squashed with 16 games left after matchweek 22.
The Blues could fall down to third behind Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who chase Tuchel’s side with one point and two games at hand.
Liverpool who are currently 14 points behind the league leaders could move seven points ahead of Chelsea and eight points behind City if they win their outstanding matches.
City could extend their lead further when they host Southampton at the Etihad Stadium next Saturday while Chelsea travel to the AMEX Stadium to face Brighton.
