The man responsible for the shooting death of Monroe University basketball player, Amira McLeod, has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
McLeod was struck by a stray bullet outside a house party in Hempstead last November.
Jacob McMillan, 18, pleaded guilty in June to murder and additional charges stemming from the shooting.
McLeod’s mother, coach and other family members and loved ones were in court as McMillan received his sentence.
According to prosecutors, McMillan, a Baldwin resident, attempted to gain entry to a party on Willow Avenue but opened fire after the host tried to search him before allowing him inside. McMillan fired three rounds, striking three people, including McLeod. She suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Originally from Queens, McLeod was a student at Monroe University in the Bronx, where she was remembered as a valued member of the school’s basketball team.
“Amira was innocent, enjoying her friendships and her youth when her life was shockingly and tragically cut short by this defendant’s violent outburst. This plea ensures justice for Amira and the countless people who loved her,” District Attorney Anne Donnelly previously said.
