Rivers police have arrested a 30-year-old-man, Henry Ogbuji, for allegedly defiling a twelve-year-old girl in Rumuiprikon, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The girl’s guardian reported the matter to the police after she discovered that the minor had been raped and now pregnant, leading to Ogbuji’s arrest.

It was gathered that Ogbuji allegedly defiled the girl when she went to his house on an errand sometime in March.

Meanwhile, a rights group, Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called for a proper investigation into the incident with a view to arraigning the suspect in court if found culpable.

National Coordinator of the group, Prince Wiro in a statement on Thursday said he had brought the incident to the notice of the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni, who doubles as the officer in charge of human rights.

When contacted, Omoni, a superintendent of police confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was already in police custody.

“I can confirm it. The matter has been transferred to my office (human rights desk). We are investigating it.

“We went for a test today. We are yet to hear the result. Maybe by tomorrow, we would ascertain if she is actually pregnant. The man is in our custody,” Omoni stated.
