Former Oyo State Governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, has died at the age of 90.

He passed away on Sunday in a private hospital in Ibadan after a brief illness. His wife, Mrs. Ronke Olunloyo, confirmed his death in a statement, saying it came just days before his 90th birthday celebration, which was being planned for later this month.

“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo… a few days before his 90th birthday,” her message read.

Mrs. Olunloyo added that the late governor was not only a renowned technocrat but also a respected traditional chief.

“The Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife… His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates even as we come to grips with this devastating event,” she stated.

She also appealed for privacy as the family begins plans for his burial.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, described the late Olunloyo as a brilliant and patriotic leader who served Oyo State at an important time in its history.

“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Oyo State, I express my heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State,” Governor Makinde said in a statement.

“In Dr. Olunloyo, we have lost another icon… a highly cerebral and patriotic leader, who served our great state at its early stages.”

The governor also said he was grateful that Olunloyo was honoured while he was still alive.

“My joy is that our government immortalised and honoured Pa Olunloyo in his lifetime… as we named the Ibadan Airport Road and the Leisure Park on the axis after him in recognition of his service to the state,” he added.

President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, also paid tribute on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

“I am saddened by the passing of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo at the age of 89. He was a revered Nigerian Elder Statesman and former Governor of Oyo State. A patriotic and astute leader. A renowned mathematician. Nigeria has lost one of its best minds. May his soul rest in peace,” Adesina wrote.

Dr. Olunloyo was known as a mathematician, engineer, and public servant. He was the first Rector of the Polytechnic Ibadan and the Kwara State Polytechnic. He served in various important roles in Nigeria’s development.

The family says further announcements will be made soon concerning his burial.
