LP condemns S’court failure to deliver verdict on Obi’s appeal
The Labor Party has expressed outrage over the Supreme Court’s failure to deliver a judgment in the appeal filed by its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, stated that the apex court only delivered a verdict on the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, while omitting the LP’s appeal.
The LP recalled that on October 26, the Supreme Court dismissed petitions challenging the election of President Bola Tinubu, including those filed by the LP and PDP.
However, the LP contends that after delivering the judgment on the PDP’s appeal, the Presiding Justice, His Lordship John Inyang Okoro JSC, merely stated verbally that the decision on the LP’s appeal would align with the PDP’s judgment.
“The LP finds it very embarrassing and depressing that the Supreme Court would, after hearing the appeal by our party, refuse to deliver any judgment and also fail to avail our party of any copy of whatever it considers to be its decision.
“With every sense of responsibility, the LP believes that the Supreme Court’s conduct is regrettable and unprecedented.
“This constitutes an unmitigated breach of the constitutional right of LP and her candidate to a fair hearing”, the statement partly read.
The LP considers this omission as unprecedented and unacceptable. They maintain that the Supreme Court’s failure to deliver a formal judgment or provide a copy of the decision to the LP constitutes a breach of their constitutional right to a fair hearing.
