Liverpool goal disallowed in error, PGMOL apologize

Published

Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon was disallowed incorrectly, the refereeing body PGMOL has admitted.

The goal was ruled out for offside, but replays showed that Diaz was clearly onside when he received the ball from Mohamed Salah.

PGMOL said in a statement: “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.”

After the match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said that he didn’t think an apology from PGMOL would mean much.

I don’t think we should talk too much about that because it doesn’t help at all,” Klopp said. “Wolves got a similar statement, or apology. They didn’t get a point out of United and we won’t get a point today so it doesn’t help.”

Liverpool lost the match 2-1, despite playing with nine men for much of the second half.
