LeBron James will leave the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the 2026/27 NBA season, ending his eight-year spell with the franchise in one of the biggest moves of this year’s free agency.

According to People, the 41-year-old informed the Lakers of his decision on the opening day of free agency, confirming that he intends to continue his career with another team.

The announcement was confirmed by James’ agent, Rich Paul, in a statement to ESPN.

“LeBron James will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season and has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere,” Paul said.

NBA insider Shams Charania reported that James notified the Lakers before free agency officially opened as a gesture of respect, allowing the franchise to plan its offseason accordingly.

James joined the Lakers in 2018 and led the team to the 2020 NBA championship during the COVID-19 bubble season. During his time in Los Angeles, he remained one of the league’s biggest stars while continuing to chase more titles.

The four-time NBA champion has repeatedly stated his desire to compete for another championship before retiring.

Several teams are expected to pursue the veteran forward, with the Golden State Warriors reportedly among the franchises interested in signing him. Reports also suggest the Warriors are exploring a reunion between James and his former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis.
