Nigeria’s Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed has said there is no such thing as social media bill before the Senate.
Mohammed vehemently denied the existence of the bill in an interview with German media outfit Deutsche Welle (DW).
Despite being confronted with a series of evidence by his interviewer Tim Sebastian in London, the minister insisted that such bill is not before the Nigerian Senate.
He said:
“I’m not even aware of the bill,” Mohammed told DW.
He added:
“There is no such bill before the House. I can say that with relative authority.”
Mohammed who has been very outspoken in support of the bill in recent past justifying why it should be passed, shocked many with his denial.
The bill which is sponsored by Senator Muhammad Sani Musa of the All Progressives Congress passed the first and second readings on November 5 and 20 respectively.
The bill had sparked outrage on social media and has attracted the attention of the international media.
Many have been calling for the reversal of the bill which they said will empower the government to clamp down and witchhunt perceived critics.
