Lagos shuts Alade market over environmental law violations

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday shut down the popular Alade Market located in the Onigbongbo Local Council Area of Ikeja.

The closure, the government claimed, followed repeated violations of environmental laws despite several prior warnings.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, directed officials from the Lagos State Waste Management Agency, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and Kick Against Indiscipline to shut the market.

Kunle Adeshina, the Director of Public Affairs for the Ministry, made the announcement through the ministry’s official social media handle.

He explained, “As directed by Honorable Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, MOE&WR, Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI/LAGESC, in a joint operation on Wednesday morning, sealed Alade Market situated in Onigbongbo LCDA.”

He said the market would remain closed until specific conditions set by the government are met.

According to him, the closure of Alade Market is part of the ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to address environmental violations and ensure compliance with sanitation laws.

Other popular markets, including Oyingbo, Alayabiagba, Mile-12, Alaba International, ASPAMDA, Ladipo, and Oke-Odo, have also been closed for similar reasons recently.
