Lagos police arrest man for possessing fake naira notes

Lagos State police have apprehended a 47-year-old man identified as Shola for being in possession of N13,000 in counterfeit Naira notes.

The arrest was confirmed by the spokesperson for the police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday.

The suspect was reportedly apprehended on January 17, 2024, at around 6:30 p.m. at Apapa Under Bridge, Lagos.

The arrest followed an incident where the individual purchased goods worth N7,000 at Oba Abdulfatai Aromire Ojora market, Ijora, using fake Naira notes.

Hundeyin revealed that the suspect was handed over to police operatives from Ijora Badia Police Divisional, where an additional N6,000 in fake Naira notes was discovered on his person, bringing the total amount of suspected counterfeit currency recovered to N13,000.

“The case was subsequently transferred to State CID, Yaba, Lagos, for further investigation. The suspect admitted to the commission of the crime and mentioned where he purchased the suspected counterfeit currencies. The exhibit recovered has been duly registered, and efforts are in progress to apprehend other accomplices connected to the crime,” Hundeyin stated.
