Violence broke out in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, on Sunday, leaving a passenger dead after being crushed by a speeding vehicle.
The fight was between road transport workers, known as agberos, and supporters of a local monarch. The trouble started after the monarch opened a new motor park for vehicles travelling to the North and East.
A resident, Shola, said, “The monarch built a park near the Alaba Market side of the road. The CP was even there on Saturday when it was unveiled. But the agberos were not happy with it, so they started a fight.”
Another resident, Abbey, said, “While they were chasing each other, a passenger trying to cross the road was hit by a fast-moving vehicle and died immediately.”
Videos shared showed the victim’s body lying in blood while sympathisers gathered around.
Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police visited the scene and also met with the groups on Monday at the command headquarters in Ikeja to find a solution.
