Lady loses job offer over unruly phone conversation with HR officer
A Nigerian lady has just lost a job opportunity over the ‘unruly’ way she responded to a Human Resources officer on the phone.
Victor Ejechi, a social media user, shared the story on Twitter on Monday.
Ejechi was reacting to a tweet by career development expert Dr. Dipo Awojide who advised job seekers to always respond to phone calls professionally and politely.
Awojide had tweeted:
“Looking for a job or a new job? Always answer your phone in a professional and respectful manner. An employer or HR manager might be calling you. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by being rude or condescending.”
Reacting to the tweet, Ejechi narrated how a lady who applied for a job in his company lost the opportunity of working with the firm despite being the best among other applicants after the interview.
He tweeted:
“I was in my HR’s office when she called a prospective employee. HR: Good afternoon. Please am I speaking with Linda Okafor? Linda: If you no know me why you dey call my number? My HR was disappointed because Linda was the best candidate that qualified for the Job.
“She finally gave the Job to the second-best. I met Linda Okafor during her interview process she was good and sounded really awesome. I tried to example to my HR. Could it be that someone just provoked her or something? My HR said, so if I provoke her tomorrow nko?”

Another Twitter user who reacted to Awojide’s tweet also narrated how an applicant was flirting with her over the phone after calling to inform him that he has been selected for a job he applied for.
She tweeted:
This is very vital. I phoned a candidate the other day and he immediately flirted with me, told me my voice was sexy, that he liked the way I pronounced his full name and wonder what it would sound like if I were moaning it. I KID YOU NOT

Another user also reacted:
A friend told me of her experience lately. She got a call and thought it was my younger sister calling to play pranks on her. She started saying “you be mumu o”… Before she realized it was a real job call? It was too late.. The lady on the other end said I’ll get back to you.
