Kuje jailbreak: Abba Kyari makes case for bail
Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has made a fresh case to be released on bail after appearing before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Channels, the embattled DCP on Thursday, being his third appearance before the court narrated his ordeal during the recent terrorist attack on the Kuje custodial centre in Abuja where he was detained.
Punch Metro reported that the custodial centre was attacked by the Boko Haram breakaway faction, Islamic State West Africa Province, on 5 July, freeing over 600 inmates including some terrorists.
Kyari was rumoured to have escaped during the terrorist attack, a report confirmed by some unnamed prison source but his appearance in court proved otherwise.
However, Kyari asked the court to grant his fresh application for bail on the grounds that the Kuje jail has established an exceptional circumstance that should warrant the court to release him and his men on bail pending the determination of the charges preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as they have shown that they will not jump bail.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA urged the court to refuse the defendant’s fresh application for bail on the grounds that there was no evidence to prove that they were being confined with criminals at the correctional facility.
