The newly posted Divisional Police Officer of Agbarho Division, Delta State, CSP Jega, was shot dead by suspected kidnappers during a rescue mission in the early hours of Monday.

The tragic incident happened around 1 a.m., just two days after CSP Jega took charge at the Agbarho Divisional Command.

According to reports, CSP Jega and the DPO of Orerokpe Division, CSP Paul, led their officers on a mission to rescue kidnapped victims when they were ambushed near the Agbarho rail station. The kidnappers opened fire on the police team, leading to a deadly exchange of gunfire.

Unfortunately, CSP Jega and several policemen were killed, while CSP Paul narrowly escaped with injuries. He was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where doctors are fighting to save his life.

Reacting to the incident, a Warri-based activist, Israel Joe, expressed deep sorrow. “I feel very pained about this news. I spoke with CSP Jega just yesterday, and he showed his dedication to duty by cautioning his men for demanding money from a citizen. This is tearful,” Joe said. He offered his condolences to the Nigeria Police Force and the families of those affected.

The Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, saying, “They (the police team) were ambushed. But it’s only the DPO that we lost.”
