Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has warned teachers against forcing students to do hard labour, both within and outside school premises.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, on Sunday, the governor said schools should focus on education and moral training, not manual labour.
Governor Yusuf gave the warning after an unscheduled visit to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano, where he found students digging a toilet pipeline.
Angered by the situation, he confronted the headmaster about assigning such work to students. The headmaster explained that the task was given after school hours, but the governor insisted that the practice must stop immediately.
“No student should be made to do such work again. Schools are for learning, not hard labour,” Yusuf said.
He assured the school management that his government would renovate all old buildings, including the mosque attached to the school.
He also directed that any school project must be reported to the Ministry of Education or his office for proper execution.
During his visit, the governor also inspected the reconstruction of the Kano Printing Press, which was damaged during the End-Bad-Governance protests.
He warned the contractor to follow the project’s guidelines, expressing concerns that some structures did not meet the required standards.
