American actor and singer, Jussie Smollett, has been arrested by Chicago police after he claimed he was attacked and beaten by two masked men shouting racist and homophobic slurs.

This was revealed by Chicago police spokesman, Anthony Guglielmih, on the force Twitter page.

The tweet reads;

“Jussie Smollet is under arrest and in custody of detectives. At 9am at #ChicagoPolice Headquarters, Supt Eddie Johnson, Commander of Area Central Detectives Edward Wodnicki will brief reporters on the investigation prior to the defendants appearance in court.”

Chicago police say Smollett turned himself in on Thursday morning to face a charge of making a false police report when he said he was attacked.

Police superintendent Eddie Johnson plans to hold a morning news conference and Smollett is expected to appear in court later on Thursday.

The 36-year-old gay actor was charged with felony disorderly conduct on Wednesday.
