The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that it has achieved more than 87 per cent preparedness for the upcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20.

According to NAN, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, disclosed this during an interview in Enugu on Wednesday.

Chukwu said the commission had completed the sorting of non sensitive materials, which were being dispatched to the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district.

“We are sending the non-sensitive materials today (June 3) to our council area offices involved and by Thursday (June 4), the non-sensitive materials will be further moved to INEC’s Registration Area Centres (RACs),” he said.

The REC also revealed that all Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices had been fully configured and charged ahead of the exercise to ensure a smooth voting process.

According to him, the commission has concluded stakeholder engagements at the state, senatorial and local government levels, with participants receiving clarifications on issues relating to the conduct of the election.

Chukwu noted that four political parties would participate in the by-election, although he declined to disclose their identities pending approval of reports from the parties’ primaries by INEC headquarters.

“Why I will not mention the political parties yet is that we are waiting for our headquarters’ approval of the report written on the parties’ primaries conducted,” he explained.

He further disclosed that training for election officials would take place on Friday as part of preparations for the poll.

The REC added that the commission would soon meet with the police and other security agencies to ensure adequate protection for electoral officials, voters and election materials throughout the exercise.

INEC had earlier published the notice and timetable for the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election on May 21, with voting scheduled for June 20.
