The Joint Security Taskforce in Imo State, code-named Operation Udoka, has neutralised four suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

Five other suspects were also arrested during an ongoing operation aimed at dismantling militant camps in the state.

The taskforce, comprising personnel from the Nigerian Police Force, Armed Forces, Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps targeted a camp at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Eziama Obiato, Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

Security officials said the church had been repurposed as a hideout by the group, led by a wanted figure, Monday Oluchukwu Ogu, also known as “B44.”

During a press briefing at the operation site, Brig. Gen. Usman Lawal, Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze; Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma; and Brig. Gen. Joseph Ogbonna (Rtd), Special Adviser to the Imo State Government on Security Affairs, expressed satisfaction with the operation’s success.

They revealed that the security forces recovered eight motorcycles, explosives, communication devices, and other dangerous weapons linked to the group. Explosive devices planted in the area were safely detonated.

The security chiefs described Eziama as one of the strongholds of criminal elements in the state, noting that symbols and flags of Biafra were found mounted at strategic locations. The operation has reportedly helped restore calm to the community, which had been under siege for months.

The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, urged residents of Eziama and other previously deserted communities in Imo to return, assuring them of their safety.

He also reassured the public of adequate security measures during the upcoming yuletide celebrations, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to working with sister agencies to guarantee safety across the state.

Brig. Gen. Ogbonna praised the Imo State Government, under Governor Hope Uzodimma, for its support in addressing security challenges and restoring peace.

This latest operation follows the dismantling of another ESN camp earlier this month in Aku Community, Okigwe LGA. Imo State security forces continue to target militant hideouts, aiming to dismantle networks responsible for violent attacks and kidnappings in the region.
