Imo State Government has sealed off popular Everyday Supermarket and adjoining businesses in the Ikenegbu axis, following concerns raised by local structural engineer Kingsley Onwubiko regarding potential structural flaws.

“Structural deficiencies were observed at the walls of the supermarket,” explained Onwubiko, prompting the government to swiftly respond by sealing the plaza. The move aims to facilitate a comprehensive integrity test and, if needed, reinforce the buildings.

During a visit to the site, it was evident that Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) officials had sealed off the premises, suspending all business activities.

A source from the agency confirmed the directive originated from Governor Hope Uzodimma himself, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to preventing building collapses.

Structural engineer Kingsley Onwubiko praised the government’s quick response and decision to seal the property for a thorough integrity assessment.

He stressed the importance of not stopping at sealing but proceeding with necessary measures based on the assessment’s findings.

“Appropriate measures such as restructuring or, if necessary, demolition of the compromised sections should be undertaken to mitigate risks and safeguard lives and property,” urged Onwubiko.

He reaffirmed his team’s dedication to identifying and addressing similar structural anomalies across the state, emphasizing the proactive intervention needed to preempt potential building collapses.
