How Ronaldo ended up with EURO 2020 Golden Boot
Portugal superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, won the Golden Boot in the Euro 2020 despite suffering a Round of 16 exit after a disappointing outing with the defending champions.
The Juventus forward netted five goals in four matches, including a brace against France in the group stage to equal Iranian forward, Ali Daei’s record of 109 international goals.
Ronaldo who began the tournament with a brace against both Hungary and the opener in the 4-2 defeat to Germany in their second group match, however, failed to score in the 0-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16.
He was tied on goals with Czech Republic forward Patrik Schick who scored his fifth goal in the competition against Denmark in the quarter-finals, but unlike Schick, Ronaldo has assisted in another teammate scoring, giving him an edge over the Czech player.
As per UEFA rules, if there is more than one player with the same number of goals the tie is settled by assists. If it remains deadlocked, then it is settled by the fewest minutes played, UK Metro reports.
Harry Kane who had four goals in the tournament stood a chance of beating the Portuguese to the award but he failed to score and make an assist against Italy in the 1-0 defeat at Wembley, allowing the Golden Boot award go to Lisbon.
