Hong Kong recorded its hottest day of the year on Sunday, with temperatures climbing to 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 Fahrenheit) in the afternoon as Severe Typhoon Dolphin affected the region.
The Hong Kong Observatory said air sinking from the outer circulation of Dolphin brought generally fine but exceptionally hot conditions across Guangdong province.
By 1pm (Hong Kong time), the Observatory’s weather station had registered 36 degrees, surpassing the previous annual high of 34.7 degrees recorded on Saturday afternoon.
Temperatures were even higher in some areas, with Sheung Shui reaching 38.3 degrees, while Yuen Long Park and Wong Tai Sin saw temperatures of around 37 degrees.
The weather forecaster said the high-temperature conditions are expected to persist through the middle of the week. Dolphin was located about 180km (112 miles) east of Wenzhou and was expected to travel westward at approximately 18 km/h (11.2mph) towards Zhejiang province before moving inland.
