Hollywood is mourning the passing of acclaimed actress Diane Keaton, who has died at the age of 79.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Keaton rose to prominence in the early 1970s through her memorable role as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather series.

Her performance cemented her place in cinematic history and launched a career that spanned more than five decades, marked by her versatility, intelligence, and charm.

In 1977, Keaton starred in Annie Hall, the romantic comedy directed by Woody Allen.

Her portrayal in the film earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978. Known for her unique blend of humour, vulnerability, and authenticity, Keaton quickly became one of the defining screen icons of her generation.

Throughout her illustrious career, she delivered acclaimed performances in numerous films, including Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Reds, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give. She received four Oscar nominations, all in the Best Actress category.

Keaton’s family confirmed her death in California to People magazine and The New York Times.

Tributes have flooded in from colleagues and admirers across the film industry. Bette Midler, her co-star in The First Wives Club, expressed her sorrow in an Instagram post, writing, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

Actor Ben Stiller also paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Diane Keaton. One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”

Recognised for her eclectic fashion sense, sharp wit, and candid personality, Keaton was admired not only for her talent but also for her sincerity and warmth off-screen.

Despite her enduring fame, she led a relatively private personal life. She never married but was a devoted mother to her two adopted children, Dexter and Duke.
