Hollywood company developing series from Nigeria’s Akwaeke Emezi’s novel, ‘Freshwater’
Hollywood production company, FX, is in early development on a series based on Nigerian author Akwaeke Emezi’s debut novel, ‘Freshwater’.
‘Freshwater’ tells the story of a protagonist named Ada, who has been occupied by multiple ogbanje spirits, as a way of exploring the spirit/body binary.
‘Freshwater’ is one chapter of ‘Unblinding’, a series of self-portraits which includes paintings and video art.
The upcoming series focuses on Ada, a Nigerian student in her final year of college who finds out that she has three spirits living in her subconscious.
They eventually take control of her, threatening to ruin her life and sanity.
Emezi will write and executive produce the project alongside Tamara P. Carter. FX Productions will produce with Kevin Wandell with Lindsey Donahue overseeing the project for FX.
‘Freshwater’ has drawn notable praise for Emezi.
The novel is a finalist for the NYPL Young Lions Award, the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction, and the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction.
Recently, ‘Freshwater’ was nominated for the Women’s Prize for Fiction — the first time a non-binary transgender author has been nominated for the prize.
