Herdsmen working with traditional rulers, Tiv group alleges

Published

The Tiv people of Nasarawa State have appealed to the state and Federal Governments to stop the frequent killing of their people by suspected herdsmen in the state.

They also claimed that some traditional rulers in the state were working with the suspected herdsmen to attack the Tiv people.

The Tiv communities made their plea through the president of the Tiv Youths Organisation in the state, Barr Barnabas Zayol, at a press conference in Lafia on Thursday.

Zayol accused some traditional rulers of being part of the problem instead of being part of the solution. He said they were helping the suspected herdsmen to take over the Tiv farmlands and homes.

Zayol said, “The Tiv people in Doma LGA particularly Doma South are at the mercy of traditional rulers who are operating with the Fulani herdsmen and their kinsmen to dispose us of our farmlands and some homes.

“We are here to let the whole world know that the Tiv people in Nasarawa State are not happy because of the perennial onslaught, pogrom, arson, maiming, displacement and occupation of our ancestral farmlands and homes by the Fulani herdsmen who boldly informed us of their readiness to deal with us amidst the threats of some traditional rulers who ceded our ancestral farmlands to them.”

The group appealed to the government to come to their aid before the herdsmen wiped them out.
