The prestigious Headies Awards, renowned for honoring the best of Nigerian music, is making a homecoming after two years abroad.
According to The Guardian, the upcoming 17th edition will be held in Nigeria, marking a triumphant return to its birth nation.
Since its inception in 2006, the Headies has been a beacon for Nigerian music, recognizing the talent and creativity of artists across various genres. However, in 2022 and 2023, the awards ceremony took place in Atlanta, USA, aiming to expand its global reach.
While this move sought to increase the awards’ international visibility, it didn’t resonate well with the Nigerian audience. Now, the award show is poised to return home.
“We are bringing the world back home to the place that birthed the sound that has led everybody to the dance floor,” expressed the organizers.
This decision reflects a renewed emphasis on celebrating Nigerian music within its vibrant cultural context.
“Given the rise of Afrobeats on the global stage, we felt it was important to share the good news of great music with new audiences,” the organizers explained. “The US editions showcased our global stars and future talents, but this year, we’re going back to our roots.”
Details regarding the exact date and venue for the 17th Headies Awards remain undisclosed.
