HE TORE HER VAGINA! Man to apologise in village square after raping Lagos schoolgirl

Published

The sad story of a Lagos schoolgirl who was raped and left with bruises and a torn vagina has been shared on Facebook.

Olorunfunmi Adebajo Olafimihan, who shared the story on her timeline, said the girl’s mother beat her after the rape incident came to light.

Olafimihan, whose Facebook profile described as Programme Director with  Kindle Africa Empowerment Initiative, said the rapist was caught and the community agreed on a punishment for him.

Meanwhile, the girl has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The apprehended serial rapist who was forced to confess by the community leaders and also accept his punishments is expected to make a public apology in the village square next week.

Olafimihan wrote;

Thanks to Stand To End Rape, we are providing counselling for the girl. She went with her counsellor and Sam to the Mirabel Centre for medicals. She has a tear in her v@gina, bruises all over her body and abrasions to her wrists. She’s neither eating nor talking. Her mother will be counselled too (why would you beat your daughter for being raped!)

After a 3 hour discussion with the Baale, youth leaders and other community men, we extracted a statement from him.

The final verdict is in his statement as seen in the photo below. The public apologies will be done next Friday at the village square.

We can’t involve the police (yet) because it’s a community steeped in culture and tradition. Everyone is related to everyone else so the family of the girl is not really pushing for justice. We decided that it has to be a punishment agreed upon by the entire community else our safety would be at stake.

We have threatened to involve the police (and indict the community as enablers) if they don’t fulfil their part of ensuring he complies with the punishment.

The other girls in class thanked us profusely. A serial rapist is finally being shamed.

In a follow-up post, she wrote,

Peacebuilding vs the Justice YOU seek.

In the past 2 days I have received countless suggestions on how I should have handled the rape case. I appreciate them all. I took the best decision after several hours of negotiations and consultation with my team. I also considered these.

1. An elder in our host community cautioned me about interfering in the matter. “Be careful of your safety. You are an outsider. They live in a world different from yours. If the father doesn’t seek justice, DON’T DO IT. Even if the mother wants it.” A reminder that you are an outsider is not one to be taken for granted.

2. I don’t understand their language and my interpreter is the son of the baale (chief) of another community. We sat with over 25 peopl and dont know what they were saying about us. The interpreter had to sneak out to use phone calls to communicate what he couldn’t tell us in their presence. We don’t want to pitch a community against the other. Inter-communal clashes are real.

3. As an outsider, I couldn’t have taken the police there. I don’t know the terrain. They live on water. I live on land. The Baale is a demigod, the elders agreed that what the perpetrator did was wrong, agreed that he should be punished but didn’t want the police involved. The boy fled but the baale made sure he came back. Working with their demigod was our best bet.

4. Our goal is to provide education to them. After negotiations with the community leaders, the Baale mentioned that their community has a problem of lack of education and they’d be glad if we could help them with that. That’s some form of acceptance which would not have happened if we had obtained justice our way.

Too many angles to this, but trust me when I say we chose the best option. The girl is being counselled and treated by professionals. The boy will be punished and mentored/counselled and the community will be educated. That’s called rehabilitative justice.

And yes, this is happening in Lagos!
