HARLEQUIN-TYPE ICHTHYOSIS! IDP gives birth to ghostlike baby with a rare skin disorder in Borno

A woman living in an internally displaced person camp in Maiduguri, Borno State has given birth to a baby with a rare type of genetic disorder.

The woman and workers at the Umaru Shehu Ultramodern Hospital in Maiduguri were said to have fled the scene.

According to Yerwa Express News, by a medical doctor working with the hospital who prefers anonymity.

The doctor described the condition as Harlequin-type ichthyosis.

According to Wikipedia, ‘Harlequin-type ichthyosis is a genetic disorder which results in thickened skin over nearly the entire body at birth.

‘The skin forms large, diamond-shaped plates that are separated by deep cracks.

‘They affect the shape of the eyelids, nose, mouth, and ears, and limit movement of the arms and legs’.

Records have shown that such child don’t survive more than the first month.

Doctors at the relevant department are as at the time of filing this report in an operation room.
