Gunmen wearing military uniforms reportedly killed Innocent Obi, the Deputy Registrar of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Uwana, Ebonyi State, in his hometown of Ezeala/Ezike autonomous community in Umuezeala, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

Obi, who had previously served in the military, retired before taking up his role at Federal Polytechnic Uwana. He had also applied for the position of the school’s substantive Registrar before his untimely death.

The attack on Obi occurred shortly after he returned from the funeral of a relative who had lost his life in the Northeast while serving as a soldier.

According to a local source, “They broke through the main door and started using machetes and axes on him.”

“His cry for help attracted villagers to the scene, but the boys who were operating on three motorcycles started shooting consistently into the air.”

“The shooting forced everybody who had come out to assist back, and they abducted Dee Onye Army from his home that Friday night, leaving behind heavy blood stains.”

It was only late on Sunday afternoon that the community received information about a decomposing corpse found between Ehime Mbano and Ahiazu Mbaise.

To their shock, it was the lifeless body of Innocent Obi, also known as “Onye Army.”

The attackers had brutally murdered him beyond recognition. He was known as a man who worked tirelessly to help young people gain admission to school, and he was far from a wealthy individual, always leading a simple life.

He had just begun constructing his personal home in the village, and it was only at the decking stage when he met his tragic end.

This incident has left the community and its neighbors in a state of fear, particularly in the wake of recent killings and other criminal activities in the area, including the deaths of approximately five security personnel.

Despite the increasing insecurity in the region, some had believed that the security situation had improved after security forces had conducted operations in the area. However, this tragedy has dashed those hopes.

When reached for comment, Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police command, stated that he had not yet been briefed on the incident.
