The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Isaiah Benjamin, has warned journalists covering the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta to avoid spreading fake news.

Benjamin gave this advice on Monday, May 19, 2025, while speaking at the media centre inside the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

He said journalists must show high professionalism and confirm their information before reporting.

“We are here basically to report the Gateway Games 2024. Everything may not be working perfectly, but with what we saw during the opening ceremony, a colourful opening ceremony, I think we should give it to the state government — it was a pretty good start,” Benjamin said.

He praised the Ogun State Government for organizing a successful opening ceremony, which was attended by top dignitaries including President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Benjamin added that although the state may not have done everything perfectly, it can improve on what it has started to make the event the best in Nigeria’s history.

He also urged journalists to ask questions when in doubt.

“If you come across issues you are unclear about, please ask questions. The media committee is here to answer you. The rule in journalism says that if you are in doubt, leave it out,” he said.

“While no one is being gagged here, you are free to report as long as your report is factual, but don’t paint us in a bad light.”

The SWAN president further advised journalists to behave well, dress properly, avoid restricted areas, and always consider their personal safety.

He also said that the usual SWAN convention would take place during the sports festival, where the group will review the event and release a statement.

On complaints about accreditation and transport, Benjamin assured that steps would be taken to fix the problems.

The Chairman of the Media Committee for the Local Organising Committee, Kunle Solaja, also promised that his team would support journalists fully to help them do their jobs well.
