Five Chinese nationals were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in, while following directions from a navigation application, drove into an under-construction culvert site and plunged into a ravine along Kilometre 41 of Jalan Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai near Machang, Malaysia, on Thursday.
Machang district police chief Supt Azuhar Md Nor said police received a report on the incident from the public at about 12.01am.
Preliminary investigations found that the accident occurred around 11.50pm when a Toyota Prius, driven by a 66-year-old Chinese national carrying four other Chinese passengers, was travelling from Temangan, Machang to Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh.
“All of them were travelling from Temangan, Machang to Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh, using a navigation app.
“The vehicle is believed to have entered a culvert construction site still under construction before plunging into a ravine,” he said in a statement today.
The crash left all five occupants — three men and two women aged between 40 and 66 — injured. They were taken to Machang Hospital for treatment. Police are investigating the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Azuhar reminded motorists to remain alert to warning signs, traffic cones and barriers at construction sites, stressing that navigation applications should not be relied upon entirely, particularly during night-time journeys.
Meanwhile, Machang Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Mohd Fadzil Musa told Bernama that the injured victims were identified as Wang Fuying, 59, Wang Yumi, 61, Pan Jieyin, 66, Yang Chuan, 40, and Zeng Guojin, 65. — Bernama.
