FG to provide 1m low-cost housing units for vulnerable populations
The Federal Government has announced plans to provide one million low-cost housing units for vulnerable populations within the next seven years.
The initiative, known as the Renewed Hope Shelter Programme, will prioritize internally displaced persons and refugees.
Mrs. Chidimma Makuachukwu, National Programme Manager for the Renewed Hope Shelter Programme, made the announcement at the Sixth Nigeria Affordable Housing Finance and Innovation Summit in Abuja.
She stated that the Federal Government will collaborate with state and local governments to secure land for the housing units.
“We are working with the state government in conjunction with the local authorities to get land,” Makuachukwu explained. “Currently, we are focusing on Benue, where we are resettling IDPs back to their ancestral homes with the support of state and local authorities,” she said.
The project is expected to be expanded to all states in Nigeria by 2024. Makuachukwu emphasized that the program will utilize local labor and materials to empower local economies.
“There is no selection process in this,” she clarified. “It is about reaching the vulnerable states across the Federation.“
